Long believed lost, director Felix E Feist's feature debut was rediscovered in 1987 and immediately hailed as one of Hollywood's earliest disaster movies. Based on the book by S Fowler Wright, it combined special effects work with footage of an actual Californian earthquake to depict the tidal wave that engulfs the Eastern seaboard and leaves Sidney Blackmer to romance Peggy Shannon in the belief that his wife and family have perished. Elements of Waterworld can be detected in their battle against evil Fred Kohler and his band of outlaws, although the sentimental resolution to Lois Wilson's unexpected reappearance was just pure melodrama
